“The Necessity of Maintaining an International Law-based Order in the East and South China Sea”

International law and respect for the rules-based international order are crucial for maintaining peace and stability in the Indo–Pacific region, especially in the East and South China Sea. The seminar titled "The Necessity of Maintaining an International Law-based Order in the East and South China Sea," sought to highlight the significance of adhering to international law of the sea and the rules-based international order. The seminar also explored the relationship between the contexts of the South China Sea and the East China Sea, and identified potential solutions and opportunities for cooperation.

A leading research and training institution of Vietnam in the field of international relations and foreign policy, the Diplomatic Academy of Viet Nam (DAV) held an in-person and online seminar titled “The Necessity of Maintaining an International Law-based Order in the East and South China Sea” on January15, 2024 in Hanoi., co-organizing with Mitsubishi UFJ Research & Consulting Co., Ltd (MURC). The seminar was moderated by Dr. Nguyen Hung Son, Vice President of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, with the participation of prominent Vietnamese and Japanese speakers on international law including Mr. Susumu Takai, President of the Security Strategy Research Institute of Japan, Assoc. Prof. Yurika Ishii, Associate Professor at the National Defense Academy of Japan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lan Anh T. Nguyen, General Director of the East Sea (South China Sea) Institute, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, and Amb. Nguyen Thi Thanh Ha, Former Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Society of International Law.

The seminar included 2 sessions: SESSION 1: East and South China Sea: challenges to the International Rules-based order and SESSION 2: Towards maintaining international law based order. In each session, after the speakers’ presentations, the audiences were invited to submit questions and the speakers responded on various aspects.

The seminar lasted 120 minutes.
